Is it legal to make a van wider and still register it for street use?
I’ve seen on Ebay examples of ordinary 60s vintage Vans that had been made wider by splitting two vans and welding the two larger than half sections together, however my curiosity gets the best of me, how far can a custom job go and still be street legal? Anyone cite sources?
It really depends upon the state law. The USDOT merely
sets a maximum limit of 8 ft width, However, you had
better not have a mirror sticking out beyond that 8 ft.
Most semi-trailer manufacturers have a rail-to-rail size
of just under seven foot to allow for truck mirrors to
remain within the maximum limit overall. Anything
sticking out beyond the maximum can get you a
fine. Even if it is only part of your load, and that
includes passengers.
